GUWAHATI: More than 1.23 lakh people under
Northeast Frontier Railway zone, who had expected the lockdown to end on April 14 and planned their travel from April 15 cancelled their tickets after the lockdown was extended to May 3.

Subhanan Chanda said that altogether 3,67,655 passengers have cancelled their tickets since the lockdown started on March 24 till April 17 during the extension period. “Till April 17, NFR has refunded approximately Rs. 33.81 Crore to all these passengers.
“During the first lockdown period from March 24 to April 14, a total of 2,43,939 passengers cancelled their journey ticket and approximately Rs 22.41 crore has been refunded to them. Similarly, during the second phase of lockdown which started on April 15, a total of 1,23,716 passengers cancelled their journey tickets till April 17 and we have refunded approximately Rs 11.40 crores to them,” Chanda said.
“On April 17 alone, an amount of Rs 12, 87,993 was refunded against cancellation of 1146 E-tickets,” he added.
As part of the various measures taken in the wake of
Covid-19 by the Centre, the
railway ministry decided to suspend operation of all passenger carrying trains.
“Accordingly, passenger trains coming towards
NF Railway and originating from NF Railway was also cancelled till April 14 during the first phase of lockdown. Later the suspension was extended till May 3 as the lockdown period was also extended, “he said.
He added, “As crores of passengers travel daily by using railways as their means of transport, suspension of train operation surely created problems. However, to minimise their problem, Railway ministry immediately changed the refund rules by duly notifying changes in all types of media, so that all section of the people get to know about the changes for their benefit and heavy rush to get refund at ticket counters as well as their concern can be avoided and social distancing can be maintained.”
“NFR would like to assure all passengers that they need not worry about getting refund, as Ministry of Railways has already decided to give full refund for all ticket for the cancelled trains by amending refund rules,” he added.
NFR is continuing freight train operations to ensure the supply essential commodities. Essential staffs of NFR are working day and night to run freight train services throughout its jurisdiction ferrying essential commodities like salt, sugar, food-grains, petroleum products etc for public distribution system. Moreover NFR is also carrying items like potatoes, milk, vegetables, fertilizers and food-grains transported by private businessmen so that there is no shortage of these commodities in market for the need of common people.
