LUCKNOW: To enforce strict implementation of lockdown norms in sealed areas, demarcated as coronavirus hotspots,
Lucknow police is planning to deploy drones powered by artificial intelligence to zoom in on these localities with night-vision cameras.
Three advanced drones have already been added to the surveillance fleet of Lucknow Police. "We are receiving information from districts about people without masks crowding open areas and on rooftops till late evening in violation of social distancing norms. This is decimating the very idea of sealing hotspots and has to be checked swiftly," said a senior officer at police headquarters. Police in Agra, Etawah, Azamgarh, Noida,
Ghaziabad and Kanpur have already deployed drones for daytime surveillance of hotspots.
Lucknow Police commissioner Sujeet Pandey said, "We are using an advanced version of drones for surveillance and will use it as a regular feature in policing. More drones will be added to the fleet in coming days."
"Drones provide a bird's eye view of congested alleys and areas where police vans can't venture in. We are also monitoring intrusion of outsiders in colonies through drones," said the police commissioner. He also said, police are planning to airdrop medical supplies at hotspots and also disinfect these areas with sprayers attached to drones.
Lucknow police is keeping a vigil on densely crowded areas like Qasaibada and Phoolbagh, where at least 7,500 people live in a 1km radius. In Hardoi district, police successfully traced members of Tablighi Jamaat members hiding in mosques through drone technology. Likewise, Rae Bareli police is also using drones for crowd management. In Sitapur, drones are being used to keep vigil on crowded areas, including Khairabad. "We are also ensuring that social distancing is being maintained through drones," said LR Kumar, superintendent of police, Sitapur.
