After stray cattle, kind hearts ensure street dogs don’t starve

LUDHIANA: The drive initiated by the civic body for feeding stray cattle has been expanded after a group of dog lovers and an organization Sai Dham temple at Hambran Road joined on Tuesday. The management of Sai Dham temple will provide roti and daal while the NGO is serving milk to the street dogs. The dog lovers will handle areas within the city while the civic officials will take over areas on Chandigarh Road.
Employees of the animal birth control (ABC) centre doing sterilization of stray dogs had started feeding them on March 27, but they were able to cover small portion of the city. But now Sai Dham management and NGO Animal Protection Welfare Society have joined the civic body. The Sai Dham trust has prepared 2,500 rotis out of which 1,500 will be distributed by NGO members and the rest by the employees of ABC centre in areas like Focal Point and Samrala chowk.
Senior veterinary officer Dr Harbans Dhalla said, “Stray dogs are facing starvation due to closure of restaurants and dhabas. Although community dogs living in streets are being given food by the residents, those around eating joints are facing hunger.” He aded that MC commissioner KP Brar had directed him to join hands with all like-minded NGOs and charitable trusts that wanted to help in this initiative.
Dr Dhalla contacted Sanjay Sood of Sai Dham Temple for arranging food for the street dogs. He said on Tuesday a van of ABC Centre took food from Sai Dham Temple and distributed it in Samrala Chowk, Jamalpur, bus stand, railway station and district courts. He claimed in coming days they will try to cover more areas.
