Railways to cancel around 39 lakh tickets booked for Apr 15-May 3 due to lockdown extension

  • The railways is set to cancel around 39 lakh tickets booked for journeys between April 15 and May 3 due to the extension of the nationwide lockdown and suspension of passenger trains till the extended period in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, sources told PTI.
  • With the national transporter allowing tickets to be booked during the 21-day lockdown announced earlier for journeys starting after April 14, around 39 lakh bookings were made by passengers.
  • However, with the lockdown being extended, the railways not only cancelled all its passenger services till May 3 on Tuesday, but also stopped advance bookings.

Chinese economy contracts for first time in decades: AFP survey

China's economy contracted for the first time in around three decades in the first quarter as the coronavirus crisis brought the country to a standstill, according to an AFP poll of economists.

The world's second-largest economy tanked in the first three months of the year as factories closed, consumers were compelled to stay home and the virus spread to other countries.

Analysts from 14 institutions expect China's economy to have shrunk 8.2 percent from a year ago in the first quarter -- the first contraction since quarterly data started to be reported in the early 1990s.

New York City hospitals cancel temporary workers as coronavirus cases stabilize

Staffing agencies, which have deployed thousands of healthcare workers in recent weeks to jobs at hospitals in New York City and other areas hit hard by the coronavirus, say some of those temporary workers are no longer needed.

The trend, coupled with a flattening in the number of New Yorkers hospitalized with coronavirus infection, reinforces the sense that New York may have reached the peak of the health crisis.

"We have had to reassign some of our travelers who were going to New York," San Diego-based staffing firm Aya Healthcare said in an emailed statement.

South Korea reports 27 new cases of coronavirus

South Korea has reported 27 new cases of the coronavirus, its 14th day in a row in which the daily count came below 100, as infections continue to wane in the worst-hit city of Daegu and nearby areas.

Figures released by South Korea's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday brought national totals to 10,591 cases and 225 deaths.

The KCDC says at least 955 of the cases were linked to passengers arriving from abroad, with most of such cases detected in recent weeks in the densely populated Seoul metropolitan area.

US deportations driving up COVID-19 cases

Guatemala's health minister said Tuesday that deportees from the United States were driving up the country's COVID-19 caseload, adding that on one flight some 75% of the deportees tested positive for the virus.

Health Minister Hugo Monroy's comments were dramatically out of line with what the government had previously said about infected deportees. Later, presidential spokesman Carlos Sandoval told reporters that Monroy was referring to a March flight on which ``between 50% and 75% (of the passengers) during all their time in isolation and quarantine have come back positive.''
