Buckley: Chiefs could be caught, mathematically it's possible

2020-04-15 09:18

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Delron Buckley believes it would be unfair to award Kaizer Chiefs the Absa Premiership title if the 2019/20 season does not resume.

Football across the country has stopped due to the coronavirus pandemic that has also brought a halt to majority of all sport globally.

Amakhosi are currently at the top of the league standings with 48-points from 22 matches while Mamelodi Sundowns are in second place (44-points) with a game in hand.

Buckly feels that handing the title over with so many games left to play would be unfair as the Brazilians could dethrone Amakhosi as it is mathematically possible.

"Look, Kaizer Chiefs could be caught. Mathematically it's possible that they could be caught so I don't think it's fair because the other teams still have an opportunity," Buckley said as quoted by KickOff.

"Mamelodi Sundowns were playing CAF Champions League and obviously they have a couple of matches they haven't played, so it wouldn't be fair to give it to Chiefs.

"But at the same time, it would be unfair to not to give it to Chiefs because they've played well this season. Come next season, we are not sure what is going to happen, there's going to be transfers happening.

"So I believe it's in the hands of SAFA because obviously, they would know what they're doing but I think it would be unfair because I've seen in the UK, I think they are giving the title to Liverpool in the Premier League (if the season doesn't finish) because they can't be caught you know.

"I see that happening there but, in our country, it's obviously different with everything going on, so to speculate would be the wrong thing to do."
