An urgent police manhunt is underway for an inmate on the run who escaped from jail north of Sydney.
Convicted serial car thief Vaughan Grimston, 30, was reported missing from Cessnock Correctional Facility around 11.15am on Wednesday.
He was doing ground maintenance work when he found a set of car keys dropped by a jail employee and escaped, the Newcastle Herald reported.
Police believe Grimston may be travelling in a 2018 silver Hyundai Tucson with the NSW registration YGN-24A.
The escapee has connections to the NSW Central Coast and Sydney metropolitan areas.
He's described as Caucasian, 170-180cm tall, medium build, brown hair and green eyes.
Police warn members of the public not to approach the man, but to instead call Triple Zero immediately.

A Corrective Services NSW spokesperson said all aspects of the incident will be thoroughly investigated.
Grimston has a lengthy criminal history which included multiple convictions for car theft.
He was sentenced to three years and four months jail last September.
