West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said the TMC-led government will provide aid to migrant labourers and their families stranded in other states, adding this was not the time for communal politics.
"We all need to work together," she said, a day after hundreds of migrant labourers gathered at the Bandra Railway station and told the authorities that they wanted to return home. Similar scenes were witnessed in Gujarat's Surat as well.
The labourers thought train services would resume from April 14, the last day of the first shutdown announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. On Tuesday, the PM extended the nationwide lockdown by another 19 days till May 3.
Banerjee also said that Students of class 11 of schools under West Bengal board, colleges to be promoted to next class, semester.
The nationwide lockdown announced last month has had a catastrophic impact of the livelihood of daily wage earners, construction labourers and a heavy workforce involved in the informal sector. Once the lockdown came into force, the economic activities came to a screeching halt, triggering a massive reverse migration from cities to villages.
