West Bengal to conduct remaining 10th & 12th board exams in June

KOLKATA: The West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Examinations will hold the three remaining board exams in June. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday while discussing the measures which the state government is initiating amidst the coronavirus crisis clarified that the HS Council can only hold the exams in June and not before. CM has also announced that all students of class XI studying in the state boards will be promoted to class XII and shall not be detained.
“There were around one or two examinations in class XI which is pending. We have around 11,10,000 candidates who were appearing in the class XI final examinations. Question papers are set by the HS Council and assessment is done by the respective schools. Mostly, we have observed that the school promotes 92% to 95% of students to class XII. Only when they fail in selection tests, they are held back for another year,” said a source. He added, “CM’s decision will not impact the quality of students next year.”
The Council is however worried about the publication of results which is now likely to be delayed by more than a month. “We take 58 days to 60 days to publish HS results. We shall have to begin from scratch. We are unlikely to publish the results before the end of July. Even those subjects in which HS examinations have been held, the answer scripts have not reached the examiners due to the lockdown. Now, after the period is over, we will have to distribute them while simultaneously holding the examinations,” said an HS Council official.
Teachers have also been left worried if in 2021 HS examinations can be held on time. “The Class XII board examination will have to be pushed back. We are in no position to finish the syllabus on time. Also, holding classes over the weekend will be mandatory on several days,” said a teacher of a government-run school.
CM earlier has already announced that the classes will reopen after the lockdown and summer holidays from June 10 in the state.
“We will have to clarify from the state government if the remaining HS papers can be conducted immediately in the beginning of June or do we also have to wait till June 10 when the school reopens” pointed out an HS Council official.
