Welsh government ministers remain "absolutely committed" to setting up a coronavirus testing centre in North Wales as soon as possible, the First Minister said.

Plans were revealed for a testing centre by health chief Vaughan Gething last week, with April 20 suggested as the possible date by which it would be operational.

But no further details have been released since.

Today, First Minister Mark Drakeford told North Wales Live officials have been been working with the UK Government.

He said: "That's still what we're planning on. We've been working with the UK Government on the testing centres. We have the one in Cardiff which has been operating for over a week now and our ambition is to have one in North Wales.

"We are absolutely committed to there being a testing centre in North Wales and we are planning with our partners to make it happen."

Mr Drakeford didn't accept that the lack of any facilities in North Wales to analyse coronavirus test swabs meant there was any delay in treating patients.

He said: "The samples from North Wales are treated in exactly the same way as any other sample from elsewhere. There is no delay that is particular to North Wales in getting samples processed.

"There is huge pressure on the system with the number of tests we are now trying to process every day, but those pressures are common right across Wales and the fact the centre is not in North Wales is not itself a cause of delay.

"The results are conveyed to North Wales just as fast as elsewhere. Staff in the centre don't know where the samples are coming from, they are just trying to analyse them."

Mr Drakeford added the current situation is the "most extraordinary" anyone has faced.

"The Welsh Government is in the same position as almost all other organisations in working in completely different ways. Almost everyone is working from home rather than the office.

"We're affected as much as everywhere else, with people who are unwell or self-isolating, so the burden of dealing with things falls on fewer people.

"But we are doing our best to be as accessible as we can to people in Wales and those who can assist in conveying the message and get Wales through the coronavirus crisis.

"Our actions are focused, as you know, on two main things.

"On taking actions which allow the NHS to cope with the impact of coronavirus on our population and that's the lockdown strategy and the astonishing levels of compliance that we have seen.

"We believe the lockdown strategy is being successful and the circulation of coronavirus in the community has been suppressed and we are just beginning to see the impact feed into the hospital system.

"Our other great concern is the economy and the impact of coronavirus on people's jobs and businesses. We are working closly with the UK Government in terms of the furloughing scheme and the other measures they have put in place. We have been able to secure funding within the Welsh Government budgets to try and fill some of the gaps, especially those particular to the Welsh economy.

"And we are trying, in some limited way, in keeping the normal business of government going," he said.

Mr Drakeford said the spread of the disease has been seen to be heading from east to west and from south to north. He said no part of Wales was likely to avoid the disease.

Asked when the lockdown restrictions were likely to be relaxed Mr Drakeford warned this would only be done when expert advice suggested it was safe to do so.

And he added it would be done gradually and with social distancing measures still in place.

He said: "This will be to minimise risk and it will not be as before. We will have public health officers on the ground to guard against any local flare-ups and to take quick and effective action where these may occur."
