Hint: they are the comfiest staples you’ll want to add to your closet as well
If there’s one word that could best explain Anushka Sharma’s appeal, it would be ‘real’. The actor is unapologetically herself; and that is true of her personality, her career choices as well as her wardrobe. Her uniform of athleisure looks, tracksuits, oversized silhouettes and trusty white sneakers prove that she is no fashion victim. Quite the opposite, in fact. “Sometimes we push ourselves to wear extremely uncomfortable clothes. There are clothes meant for a specific reason—they look beautiful on screen but they’re not the most amazing clothes to wear,” she told Vogue India back in November last year. “In my own space I want to be comfortable in what I’m wearing and, most importantly, it has to reflect me—I find it difficult to just follow trends. If a fanny pack is in fashion but I don’t like how it looks on me I’m not going to wear it. I can’t push myself beyond the realm of losing my sense of self.”
True to form, her MVPs are laid back, easy and oh-so-comfortable. We zoom into her favourite sartorial sidekicks, ones she is rarely spotted without.
‘Not without my T-shirts’ could easily be Sharma’s style maxim. Whether she’s catching flights, social distancing or support her husband Virat Kohli’s cricket tournaments, she is in often seen in a slew of tees from labels like Moschino, Stella McCartney, Pull & Bear, Sandro and Maje; worn with everything from high-waist trousers to barely-there shorts. She also admits to borrowing a few from her husband’s wardrobe—which begs the question, was the oversized Balenciaga tee that the actor wore with rolled-up jeans, high socks and dad sneakers actually Kohli’s?

Sharma confessed her love for fuss-free colours when she said: “I’m an actor and have to be dressed a certain way, but if I wasn’t I think I’d just be in blacks or whites; I wouldn’t care.” So while she may wear colour on the job, her off-duty wardrobe is pared-down with a generous helping of monochrome—head-to-toe black or white, or the two hues worn together. With a Burberry cropped jacket thrown into the mix once in a while.

Is any cool girl’s wardrobe ever complete without one too many denim pieces? Certainly not Sharma’s. She prefers to wear her flared, ripped and mom jeans with oversized shirts (often white). And then there are her go-to denim jackets, thrown over crop tops and ripped white jeans. Denim on denim is not off the cards either. Cases in point include the denim culottes and ruffled blouse set from own label, Nush, as well as the cold shoulder Dhruv Kapoor denim trench coat she wore over Zara jeans.

Dresses, but make them super comfy, even better if there are pockets involved. From floaty Péro dresses worn with tan tie-up sandals and silver hoops to Bodice midis with white sneakers, Sharma makes dressed-down look so good.

When in doubt, just wear stripes. Sharma has mastered the art of giving this boardroom staple a work-from-home update. She loves her pinstriped suits and co-ord sets but tones down their stiffness with tees and sneakers. Her oversized Balenciaga white shirt and cropped pant combination is one that is perfect for grocery runs, while the pleated hem striped tunic with checked pants will work when you’re in the mood for some print-on-print drama.
