The Supreme Court has made changes in its previous ruling regarding free screening of Coronavirus in a private lab. The apex court said on Monday that this benefit will only be given to the economically backward classes who are covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Earlier on April 8, the Supreme Court said that the coronavirus test should be free even in private labs. The court had said that the investigation to be done for four and a half thousand rupees should be done free during the national disaster.
The apex court now said that it was never our intention that those who can pay the money should also get this benefit. A bench of justices Ashok Bhushan and Justice S Ravindra Bhat said on the plea of two people that putting additional financial pressure on private labs may slow the pace of investigation of coronavirus.
The Supreme Court said that during the hearing of the petition, we are satisfied that the amendment to its order of April 8 needs clarification along with the amendment. The order was originally taken keeping in mind the economically backward people. The court further said that we also want to clarify that this order is not for those who can pay the money.
After the Supreme Court's decision, private labs raised their hands. These labs said that we do not have the means for a free trial of COVID-19. The government should find a way out so that private labs can continue the investigation work amidst increasing demand.
