MUMBAI: The maximum number of violations registered by the
Mumbai Police was for overcrowding in public places which amount to 73% (2,131 cases) out of the total 2,935 cases that have been filed under the prohibitory order Criminal Procedure Code (Cr PC) section 188 from March 20 to April 12.
Police said though the people have started obeying the orders of not to venture out, still there are people from congested locality found venturing out without knowing the seriousness and consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. Till date, total 5,321 people have been booked for the violation under Section 188 while 3,975 were arrested and later released on bail, while 1,077 allowed to go after giving notices and 258 are wanted.
According to the report, 605 cases of overcrowding have been registered from eastern suburbs -Mulund, Ghatkopar, Chembur and Trombay during the period, followed by North (Aarey, Goregaon, Borivli, Kandivli, Dahisar and Gorai) 473, Western suburbs (Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, BKC, Powai and Sahar) 389, Central suburbs (Byculla, Worli, Dadar and Kurla) 388 and
South Mumbai 276.
The police had categorised the offences under different heads—violation of quarantine, hotel and shops kept open, gathering, vehicles without reason plying on roads, hawkers—to keep a track and sensitise people from venturing out during the lockdown. With a crowd gathering found the most is 572 cases registered against private vehicles caught for venturing out without valid reason.
Apart from police personnel deployed at different localities, they are taking action based on the details they get keeping a watch on people’s movement using drones and closed-circuit television (CCTV) that act as an eye. “Police are keeping a watch on people through six camera-fitted drones that are deployed at containment zones and people’s movement are kept under watch through the 5,200 closed-circuit television (CCTV) that are operational in the city.
“Many people still do not understand the seriousness of the novel coronavirus, especially in congested localities. This is the reason the maximum cases have been registered for overcrowding. We regularly are conducting police flag march in the different locality with announcements made asking people not to venture out unless it is important. Total five companies (each 120 personnel) of SRPF are patrolling highly containment zones. In order to ease out crowd gathering at market places, the zonal DCPs along with the assistant municipal commissioner (AMC) ward wise has worked out on timings for people to buy vegetables and groceries. Even congested markets have been relocated to open areas,” Joint commissioner of police (law & order) Vinay Choubey said.
