MUMBAI: Two persons were killed and at least one injured in an explosion at a chemical factory in Tarapur MIDC area of Boisar on Monday.
The blast was reported at the Galaxy Surfactants Ltd, manufacturers of chemicals and alcohols, at around 12pm.
As most of the industries around were shut due to the lockdown, the blast was heard up to around five kilometers from the spot.
The deceased have been identified as Vijay Sawant (44) and Sameer Khoja (48). The injured is Runal Thakur (35).
The factory has 250 workers. The management had obtained permission from the district collector for 105 workers.
Monday was the first day of its operation. The blast occurred in the reactor when the raw material was put in it. The factory had permission to make sanitisers and soaps.
The Tarapur MIDC fire brigade have reached the spot and are carrying out cooling and search operations.
Initial reports suggest that there were few workers in the factory.
While the district is under lockdown, factories manufacturing essential items have been permitted to operate.
The cause of the blast has not been ascertained.
