City hospitals set up two flu corners for screening patients

Ludhiana: In response to the coronavirus pandemic all city hospitals have set up two flu corners, where initially the patients are screened outside the premises in the open. The screening includes checking the temperature of the person, then sanitising him and then check whether the patient has any sort of cough, fever, breathing difficulty and other flu-like symptoms as per the guidelines of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The senior consultants further check them in these flu corners, from where they are recommended to go to the isolation centre only after proper examination.
At the Christian Medical College and Hospital, there is a separated section fitted with all modern facilities to treat Covid-19 while being able to contain the spread of this disease within the hospital. This facility has 20 beds with monitors, while oxygen ventilators for intensive care are there on eight beds. A Covid-19 patient from Jalandhar is already admitted in the hospital besides 10 suspected cases, which are admitted in the isolation ward.
The OPD services have also been restarted in full swing at hospitals with all patients and relatives being screened at the entrance itself. Patients and relatives are now allowed to enter the main hospital area after signing a consent letter. Suspected patients are being re-directed to the flu OPD, where they are being treated according to the current guidelines.
At Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), an average of 220 OPD patients visit while eight patients of seasonal flu are visiting on daily basis. Ashwani Chaudhary, medical superintendent of DMCH said, “Even after screening at the entrance, we have now put up a transparent curtain not only to maintain distance but also to prevent air-borne infections in our OPD rooms. The physical examination of patient is done as and when needed. All OPDs will be having this kind of set up soon.”
Senior consultant and physician at Mohandai Cancer and Multispecialty Oswal Hospital Geeti Puri Arora said, “We send a patient to the OPD only after the intervention of senior consultants, who confirm whether a patient has flu-like symptoms. There is a thin line for those who need to be hospitalised or kept under observation, and the aged people with comorbid condition. This step has been taken to separate the Covid-19 patients from the others coming to the hospital with emergency needs. This includes prompt and effective screening at the door while ensuring high quality care for all patients.”
“Those who are unstable with breathing issues are taken to the isolation centre, which has an entire section with PPE kits. These are patients with acute respiratory syndrome and we consider them as Covid patients until they are tested. There is a separate building for this and we are following the protocol,” she added
Oswal Hospital has screened many such patients and they have sent seven samples, out of which six have tested negative, two are pending and one was admitted on Tuesday. More than 150 people throng OPDs while a minimum of five persons reach the flu corner.
With the same , as many as 60 patients visit Deep Hospital for OPD services including 20 children at paediatric ward.
Baldev Singh, child specialist and medical superintendent at Deep Hospital, Model Town, said, “We investigate the patient through breathing rate. If the breathing rate is more than 30-35 per minute, then one is having respiratory issues. We immediately get the X-ray done and then further proceed with the case.”
At S P S Hospital more than five cases of seasonal flu and 130 patients visit OPDs. Talking to Rajiv Kundra, medical superintendent of S P S Hospital said, “Anyone is a potential patient right now, so we have to take precautions. With patients having flu symptoms, we do a basic investigations, including noting down their history and going in for CT scan for specific findings. Following this, we get to know whether the patient is having viral fever and pneumonia or not.”
