Ludhiana: The police, the district administration and various NGOs are making all out efforts to provide essential commodities to the needy. However, some people are taking advantage of the situation.
The police on Tuesday night arrested a man who had called up and emailed the Bihar government, saying he had no food to eat in Ludhiana. On learning about his SOS call, a police team reached his house to help him, but found all essential commodities stocked up there.
Following the find, the Focal Point cops arrested the man, Bharat Singh of Kohara village, for deliberately giving false information to the Bihar government and misleading the police.
Ishwar Colony police post in-charge ASI Surjit Singh said, “When a police team reached the house of Bharat, it found 15kg rice and 20kg wheat flour, besides other essential items. A case has been registered against him under sections 68 (d) of the Police Act and 182 (c ) of the IPC.”
Police said post-lockdown, there have been several such instances, wherein city-based people from Bihar and UP called up their respective state’s government and leaders as well as Prime Minister’s office, seeking help. “A few of them are tweeting for help and tagging PM office. And then their leaders, like Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Tej Pratap Yadav and Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, contact the Punjab government, share names and contacts of UP and Bihar natives and ask it to help them,” said a cop.
Besides calling up on helplines, those in need are also approaching the district and the police administration through social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. “While some of the requests are genuine, a few are fake too,” he added.
