ILS Bhubaneswar to set up Covid-19 testing centre

BHUBANESWAR: The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) Bhubaneswar is set to build a Covid-19 testing centre. The proposal has been approved by the department of biotechnology (DBT) under the Union ministry of science and technology.
The state health and family welfare department issued an official statement saying "The director of ILS Bhubaneswar has informed health secretary Nikunja Bihari Dhal that they have received the permission of DBT to conduct Covid-19 testing. The testing will commence next week." Ajay Parida, the director of ILS Bhubaneswar, said they will start Covid-19 testing from Monday onwards.
He added that they will get around 2,000 testing kits on Saturday in the first phase.
"We have all the required facilities in our institution to start conducting the tests. We have trained virologists, advanced RTPCR machine and biosafety laboratory 2 and 3 to carry out these works," Parida said.
Meanwhile, the state will also get another Covid-19 testing centre at the Ispat General Hospital in Rourkela. It will the first such centre to cater to the western part of the state. Until now, the samples from western Odisha were being brought to Bhubaneswar-based testing labs for Covid-19 testing.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has approved this laboratory. "The staff will be sent for training to the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) in Bhubaneswar from April 8 to 10," said the council in its comment.
Now, three government institutions RMRC, AIIMS Bhubaneswar and the SCB Medical College and Hospital are conducting Covid-19 testings.
These centres have tested 2,441 samples by 9am on Wednesday, of which 42 tested positive for Covid-19 in Odisha.
Though Apollo Hospitals in Bhubaneswar, which is a private hospital, received the approval for starting a testing centre here, it is is yet to do so.
