SHIMLA: Abandoned by their parents amid curfew, two minor children were rescued from an empty water tank where they had been living for the past several days in an unsafe condition. The children were shifted to Sarvodaya Rockwood Ashram Shimla for overnight stay and will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee on Wednesday.
Shimla superintendent of police Omapati Jamwal said on Tuesday night, police received information from Ajai Shrivastava, chairman of NGO Umang Foundation, about two Nepali children living in the tank of an under-construction building near Housing Board Colony Sanjauli. He said a local resident, Sunny, had given the information to the NGO over phone.
The police team contacted Sunny who guided them to the site where children were residing. When police team searched the tank, they found the children sleeping under blankets.
The children, aged 10 and 11 years, told police personnel that their parents had abandoned them, and they had no other place to live.
Shrivastava said these children were abandoned by parents as they had married elsewhere. He said people of nearby houses were providing food to them. "I had contacted additional SP Praveer Thakur to help rescue the children. Police team around midnight finally rescued them and shifted them to Bal Ashram," he said. Police will now try to locate their parents and till that time both children will stay in Bal Ashram.
