KOLKATA: A 38-year-old man was severely injured after being shot at from a close range outside his home at Nimta on the northern fringes of the city.
Cops said the man, Tanmay Das, a resident of Dum Dum Cantonment, along with a group of men, had allegedly flouted the
lockdown, having stepped out of home on Monday night. He had a miraculous escape as the bullet grazed past his vitals in the neck. He underwent a critical surgery at a private hospital off EM Bypass, where doctors stated his condition to be stable. Cops arrested six persons in connection with the incident and seized from them the gun, by which the bullet was fired.
Doctors said the bullet had pierced through his neck below the chin and fractured the mandible. "Had the bullet injured his trachea or carotid vessels, he would have died at the spot. We managed to remove the bullet and stopped the bleeding from his wounds. He underwent a three-hour surgery. He is recovering and we hope to discharge him in a couple of days," said Abhik Ghosh, a surgeon at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital.
Around 9.30pm on Monday, the man was involved in a drunken brawl with some men and one of them suddenly shot at him. On hearing the firing, locals rushed out and found Das was lying in a pool of blood while others fled the spot. He was first taken to Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital, from where he was shifted to the EM Bypass hospital. Locals said the man and his other accomplices were drinking in the open. After the incident they submitted a memorandum to Nimta police, demanding stringent night patrolling.
"In violation of the lockdown a group of people were chatting on the road. One of them was carrying a gun. But it is unclear whether any trouble broke out in them or someone pulled the trigger of the gun accidentally while toying with it. We have initiated a probe to find the exact reason behind the firing," said Ananda Roy, deputy commissioner of police , Barrackpore Commissionerate.
However, Das' family claimed it was a pre-planned attack on him and they lodged a case of attempt to murder against the accused. "He had gone out to visit his in-laws' place in the same area. The accused had called him and shot at him," said his mother, Dipa.
