The Narendra Modi government at the Center has now directed states to implement the Essential Commodities Act to prevent hoarding and black marketing of everyday essential goods in lockdown implemented across the country to prevent infection of the coronavirus.

The Center has given instructions to the Chief Secretaries of all the states in this regard. The Act provides for imprisonment of up to seven years for hoarding essential commodities.

Significantly, during the lockdown, prices of flour, pulses, gram flour, and edible oil have been disrupted due to the increase in their prices. Due to this, the poor people are facing trouble. Because of this, the Modi government has written a letter to the chief secretaries of the states and directed them to take necessary steps to curb hoarding and black marketing of essential commodities.
