CHENNAI: Civic officials have identified 695 people with flulike symptoms such as cough and fever after a field survey of 37.11 lakh households (this figure includes multiple visits to several homes) across the city as part of the Covid-19 containment plan. Of them, 291 have been ruled out as positive cases. The other 404 will be monitored by civic body doctors and if symptoms persist will be shifted to hospitals.
The corporation launched the containment plan on April 5 and the survey will continue for 90 days, say officials. As on Wednesday, Chennai district registered a total of 149 Covid-19 positive cases.

As part of the containment plan, 11 lakh houses in the city have been divided into 12,200 clusters of 75-100 houses each. Details of fever or flu cases will be tabulated and a database created after each day’s survey for further study, according to corporation officials.
Totally, 23,308 people have come to Chennai from other countries and have been home quarantined for 28 days. Of them, 3,571 people have completed their home quarantine period, officials said.
Meanwhile, in a survey conducted by Neta App, in March, a fifth of people interviewed said they would not report to a hospital on the onset of Covid-19 symptoms. The reasons they gave varied from being unsure of quarantine facilities to fear of cross contamination. The tech platform that promotes civic engagement conducted the survey, which recorded the views of 12,000 people across 23 states.
In TN, in a sample size of 1,800, 16% said they would not report to a hospital. In terms of income brackets, 95% of those in the lower income bracket said they would go to a hospital, while a third of those in the high income bracket said they would not go to a hospital if they exhibited symptoms.
At Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai, Dr B Kannan says several patients who come for treatment, attempt to conceal Covid-19 symptoms. “Some patients even pop a paracetamol before coming to the hospital hoping their fever won’t show. But every patient is screened rigorously so we find out about the symptoms when we question them,” says Dr Kannan.
On the basis of age group, the Neta App survey found that around 75% of people interviewed in the 20-35 age said they would go to the hospital. Among the over 50s, almost all said they would go to the hospital if they exhibited Covd-19 symptoms.
