CHENNAI: When Sumitra Balaram wanted a pen drive delivered to her colleague in Velachery, all she had to do open her food delivery app. For Swiggy now not only delivers food but also picks up groceries from any store you want and picks up and drops off things for you.
"The app now as a Swiggy Genie option where you can either create an order to buy anything from any store or create task where you can get things pick up and dropped off," says Sumitra, of Nandanam.
Apps like these have undergone a makeover during the 21-day lockdown. Food delivery apps and even cab aggregators are now delivering groceries. This not only helps consumers who cannot step out of their homes freely during the pandemic but also helps ensures that the staff can continue working. Swiggy now delivers food, groceries and other essential. But deliveries will be open only during set time slots -- from 6:45am to 9am, 11:45am to 2pm and 5:45pm to 8:30pm. Zomato has also started grocery delivery in 80 Indian cities, prioritising essentials.
With people hesitant to step outdoors, grocery and vegetable chains have also tied up with apps like Dunzo, which picks up and delivers anything from groceries and vegetables to medicines and gifts. "We have a tie-up with Dunzo, and we get almost 150 order per day in each store through the app," says Senthil Natarajan, managing director, Kovai Pazhamudir Nilayam, adding they are also in talks to tie-up with Swiggy in a few cities.
Cab aggregators have also got into the act. Uber has begun offering last-mile delivery service for essential goods. It has now partnered with online grocer Bigbasket as its first client.
The service will enable Bigbasket to serve its customers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chandigarh and Noida. Uber also recently announced its partnership with e-commerce platform Flipkart to provide people across Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi access to everyday essentials during the lockdown.
