Chennai lockdown news: Today's updates from your city

Army personnel have been distributing groceries, water and cooked food to those in need in Chennai.
Amid prevalent chaos and uncertainty over access to the essential services and commodities during the lockdown, we bring you the latest updates from your city.
* Update at 11.13am: On behalf of Salem Kitchipalayam Anna Library, its president M Gunasekaran and secretary G Sarala distribute relief materials to 2,112 sanitary workers, who are working in Salem municipal corporation on Thursday.

* Update at 8.58am: Guard of honour for corporation sanitary workers by the Tirunelveli city police in recognition of their service during this crisis.

* Four patients, including one hailing from Delhi, who were admitted to Villupuram Government General Hospital and tested positive for Covid-19 infection, were declared negative by mistake by the hospital staff and discharged on Tuesday morning. The hospital authorities realized the error by afternoon and sought the help of the Villipuram police to trace them. Police managed to trace three of the patients as they hailed from the district but could not trace one patient from Delhi.
* To meet the grocery needs of city residents hit by the lockdown, Chennai Corporation will roll out 7,000 mobile grocery units across the city from Thursday.
* Six young men from a city company have developed the prototype of a remote-controlled digital ventilator in four days during the lockdown, the firm’s co-founder has said. Experts in the field, though reluctant to compare it with those in use in hospital ICUs, say it has many advantages.
* The state is under a lockdown and most people get to work from home and spend quality time with their families, but doctors, nurses and paramedical staff handling Covid-19 patients are staying away from home (SAFH) to prevent community spread.
* Civic officials have identified 695 people with flulike symptoms such as cough and fever after a field survey of 37.11 lakh households (this figure includes multiple visits to several homes) across the city as part of the Covid-19 containment plan. Of them, 291 have been ruled out as positive cases. The other 404 will be monitored by civic body doctors and if symptoms persist will be shifted to hospitals.
* When Sumitra Balaram wanted a pen drive delivered to her colleague in Velachery, all she had to do open her food delivery app. For Swiggy now not only delivers food but also picks up groceries from any store you want and picks up and drops off things for you.
* The air force and Army have risen to the occasion and are helping people cope up with coronavirus pandemic and the nationwide lockdown. Personnel from Air Force Station in Avadi distributed rice to the needy while army personnel provided water and cooked food to the poor and homeless in the city.
