Chandigarh: Grace marks may make comeback

CHANDIGARH: The education department is considering to re-introduce grace marks - one of the likely reasons behind the delay in the classes IX and XI exam results.
Former education secretary B L Sharma had scrapped the policy in 2018 after more than 50% students failed in Class X board exams. The 2018 batch of Class X students was promoted from Class IX after awarding 15 grace marks. A senior official said, "Thoughts are being given to it. But nothing is final yet."
Sources said the department is planning to give 15 grace marks. It wishes to either pass the students or fail them so as to not have the task of remedial classes and start the academic session straight away digitally. Teachers, however, are not in its favour. "We will have poor board results," said a teacher. Teachers said schools were recently asked to prepare and share two results - one with grace marks and other without it. Another official said, "These are just plans right now."
