Lockdown: 92 thousand complaints of harassment and violence on child helpline in 11 days

The cases of harassment and violence against children have increased during the 21-day lockdown implemented across the country. In the last 11 days, Childline India Helpline has received 92 thousand complaints, which shows that during this period atrocities against not only women but also children have increased.

According to Childline India Deputy Director Harleen Walia, between 24 and 31 March, the 'Childline 1098' helpline received 3.07 lakh complaints from across the country, out of which 30 percent were filed for harassment and violence against children. Around 92,105 such calls came on the helpline.

According to Walia, such calls have increased by 50 percent since the lockdown was announced. Walia said these figures were shared during a workshop organized for child protection units of the districts. Other complaints that came after the lockdown included 11 percent physical health, eight percent child labor, eight percent of children fleeing and five percent of children homeless.

In addition to these, 1677 calls were recorded with questions related to the coronavirus. At the same time, 237 people said, they are sick and need help. According to Walia, the helpline has been declared an essential service during the lockdown.

Women's Commission received more than 257 complaints

Recently National Commission for Women Rekha Sharma said that the Commission received 257 complaints between March 24 and April 1 regarding domestic violence during the lockdown. Out of these 69 complaints were received through e-mail. According to Sharma, cases of domestic violence may be more than this, but most women are afraid to complain about it.
