CHANDIGARH: Hundreds of vendors jostled with each other to enter Sector 26 vegetable market on Tuesday, forcing the police to resort to mild laithicharge.
The sabzi mandi was closed on Monday for sanitisation. As it reopened in the morning, vendors - with and without tokens - made a beeline at the entry points, causing chaos. Not expecting a huge crowd, cops struggled to maintain order till they finally used their batons to ensure social distancing that was a far cry for almost half an hour.
However, a few vegetable wholesalers alleged no cops or any official from the administration was checking token of vendors. "That is why those without tokens too came to the market," they alleged. Most of the vendors were not wearing masks or gloves in the queues. On Monday, 10 vehicles and two tractors fitted with mechanical sprayers and fire engines were used to sanitise the market.
