Tamil Nadu: Depressed over not getting liquor, man jumps into well; comes out after being promised booze

CHENNAI: A 46-year-old man who was allegedly depressed over not getting liquor jumped into a well and refused to come out for long near Avadi. Manavalan, of Pattabiram, was rescued by the fire and rescue services personnel.
However, officials had to spend almost two hours cajoling him before they could rescue him. They brought him up promising to give liquor.
Manavalan, a daily wage labourer, lives with his wife and two sons. He is addicted to alcohol and was depressed over not being able to get liquor ever since the lockdown. He quarrelled with his wife. He was frustrated and picked up fight with his neighbours as well.
During a similar fight on Monday, Manavalan jumped into a 25-ft-deep well in front of his house around 8.30pm. Neighbours knew he knows swimming. But he refused to get out until he got liquor. On information, police and fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and held talks with Manavalan. Later, rescue personnel entered the well with the help of rope and brought Ma-navalan out.
