Maharashtra cyber cell register 132 FIRs in 18 days for spreading hate, fake messages on social media

MUMBAI: Total 20 first information reports (FIR) has been filed by the cyber police stations across the Maharashtra State in the last 24 hours against people for spreading rumours about communal and many communal in nature.
The action taken by the cyber police on perpetrators spreading fake news, rumors and hate speech through different mediums on social media platforms. Meanwhile, the cyber police stations in 31 districts in the state, including Mumbai, has registered total 132 cases since the lockdown period that was imposed in the state on March 22. From Tuesday, WhatsApp has disabled forwarding to many users any frequently forwarded message.
The cases that has been registered against the perpetrators in the state was for spreading fake news through WhatsApp which is 79, Facebook 24, Twitter 3, TikTok 3, You Tube & Audio clips 23 and two non-cognizable offences.
The cyber police stations has managed to arrest 35 such perpetrators for spreading fake news about coronavirus and hate messages while 28 has been shown wanted. Meanwhile the Mumbai police has arrested three so far so similar offences during the period out of the nine cases that has been registered.
“In last 24 hours total 20 FIR registered in Maharashtra about fake news, rumors and hate speech on social media and other online channels. Out of the 20 cases registered on Tuesday, 14 are communal in nature and six are rumors about Corona Epidemics,” Maharashtra State Superintendent of Police (Cyber) Balsing Rajput told TOI.
The 20 cases that was registered on Tuesday was five from Jalna, Usmanabad (1), Hingoli (1), Buldhana (2), Beed (10), Nashik city (1), Amaravati city (1) and Kolhapur (9).
“In the last 5 days there has been increase in the number of hate speech and communal crimes over social media. Out of the total 132 cases, 49 cases were hate speeches over social media. What’s App, Facebook and tweeter are mostly used for these activities. “From April 7, WhatsApp has disabled forwarding to many users any frequently forwarded message. Stringent action has been initiated against those circulating the fake news related to COVID-19 and those booked will have imprisoned upto five years,” said Rajput.
He said the consequences of spreading fake news the admins of WhatsApp group as well as the users posting such objectionable content will be punished under section 153A & B of IPC punishes offenses related to promoting enmity between different groups and will be punished with imprisonment from three to five years as well as fine and other serious sections.
