Dan Ashe, President and CEO, AZA mentioned in a statement that the accreditation signifies Honolulu Zoo’s active role in protecting the world’s wild animals and wild places while providing exceptional animal care and meaningful guest experiences. He said the Honolulu Zoo is a leader in the zoological profession and AZA is proud to have them among its members.
Kirk Caldwell, Mayor, Honolulu also said in a press brief that the Honolulu Zoo staff deserves the recognition and international level certification for their hard work and the love for animals. He mentioned that the zoo regained their accreditation due to the team efforts under the leadership of Director Santos and assistance of the Department of Enterprise Services Deputy Director Tracy Kubota. He added that the zoo is one of the gems in the island of Oahu and the recognition puts it among the best of not just in the country but across the world.
Linda Santos, Director, Honolulu Zoo further stated that the credit of the recognition geos to the hard work of the zoo staff, along with the leadership and staff of the numerous agencies of the City and County of Honolulu. She also appreciate the two support organizations, the Honolulu Zoo Society and Service System Associates. She mentioned that the AZA accreditation was achieved due to coordinated efforts. She shared that the zoo looks forward to work closely with AZA to expand their role in conservation efforts.
The accreditation process includes a detailed application and a meticulous on-site inspection by a team of trained zoo and aquarium professionals. The inspecting team observes all aspects of the facility’s operation, including animal care and welfare, conservation efforts, keeper training, safety for visitors, staff and animals, educational programs, veterinary programs, financial stability, risk management and visitor services. Top officials are also interviewed at a formal hearing of AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission, after which accreditation is granted, tabled, or denied.
