Amid prevalent chaos and uncertainty over access to the essential services and commodities during the lockdown, we bring you the latest updates from Chandigarh.
* City residents who have completed their home quarantine period can remove quarantine posters pasted on their residences. They do not need permission from the UT administration for this. UT health secretary Arun Kumar Gupta said the administration mentions start date and end date of quarantine on the posters. After completion of the home quarantine period, residents can remove them without permission from the UT administration, he said.
*11:06am At a time when the medical specialists, health workers, policemen and other allied workers are lacking high-quality protective gear in their battle against Covid-19, the Punjab's textile industry has stepped forward to develop Personal Protective Equipment, especially hazmat (hazardous materials) suits, which are not only of high quality, but will be less costly as compared to the imported ones.
* Police detained 9,260 people for violating curfew in the past 15 days. They registered 105 FIRs and arrested 125 people under sections 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant, 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread a deadly infection) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). UT police also booked two persons for posting and sharing videos against a particular community on social media. The number of persons detained has been falling in the last few days.
*10:08am Chandigarh to get its first disinfectant tunnel at Sector 26 mandi, to sprinkle water mixed with hydrogen peroxide.

* Hundreds of vendors jostled with each other to enter Sector 26 vegetable market on Tuesday, forcing the police to resort to mild laithicharge. The sabzi mandi was closed on Monday for sanitisation. As it reopened in the morning, vendors — with and without tokens — made a beeline at the entry points, causing chaos.
* A person who was home quarantined in Sector 20 was booked after being found roaming around on the streets. Police said they went to the house of Gaurav at Sunicity Parikarma Society and found that he was not home. They later came to know that he was roaming around on Punchkula roads.
* The prospect of opening liquor shops was uncorked in the morning but-tossed out in the evening on Tuesday.
* Chandigarh is emerging stronger in the fight against Covid-19, feels director, health services (DHS), Dr G Dewan. “In another 15 days, we will bring the cases down to zero,” he said. No fresh case of Covid-19 has been reported in the city since April 3.
* Muslim clerics have given a call to celebrate Shab-e-Barat from homes on April 9. Maulana Imran of Jama Masjid, Manimajra, said, “We have requested the community members to stay home and pray. All the members, especially youngsters, have been told to strictly adhere to the guidelines issued by the administration as fighting coronavirus is the priority at this time,” he said. The Chandigarh authorities have appreciated the step taken by Muslim community.
* A spurt in Covid-19 cases has forced the local administration to sound a red alert in eight villages of the district. The villages have been sealed and the administration is going in for extensive sampling, said deputy commissioner Girish Dayalan. The villages are Jagatpura, Dhakoli, Nayagaon, Mauli Baidwan, Alamgir, Jawaharpur, Devigarh and Mehmadpur.
* Seven members of two families tested positive for novel coronavirus on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases in Mohali to 26 — the highest in Punjab.
* Police on Tuesday requested clerics to inform if any follower has returned after attending the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi and urged them not to gather in mosques on Shab-e-Barat on April 9.
