Eight villages sealed in Mohali, survey held, 118 samples taken

MOHALI: A spurt in Covid-19 cases has forced the local administration to sound a red alert in eight villages of the district. The villages have been sealed and the administration is going in for extensive sampling, said deputy commissioner Girish Dayalan. The villages are Jagatpura, Dhakoli, Nayagaon, Mauli Baidwan, Alamgir, Jawaharpur, Devigarh and Mehmadpur.
Devigarh and Mehmadpur adjoin Jawaharpur, which has seen 11 Covid-19 cases in just two days. The administration is suspecting the community food prepared by families of those who tested positive was distributed in these villages.
The first and only death from Covid-19 was reported from Dashmesh Nagar in Nayagaon following which the entire area was sealed.
Meanwhile, the health department on Tuesday collected samples of 118 people as a precautionary measure from Jawaharpur. These people had been in contact with the positive cases. Four samples were taken from Shakti Nagar in Derabassi. Samples have been sent to PGI, Chandigarh.
The health department conducted a survey of 522 houses. The teams inspected 2,460 people. Civil surgeon Dr Manjit Singh said the health department was committed to prevent the spread of the disease and medical teams were constantly monitoring the situation. He appealed to the people to assist in the prevention of the Covid-19.
