Three East Delhi aptts and five mohallas sealed, 5,000 quarantined
* Eight Covid-19 containment zones were created in east Delhi on Tuesday and over 5,000 residents placed under quarantine after eight positive cases were reported from some localities.
* It is part of a micro-level plan to contain a local outbreak which otherwise, authorities fear, may infect tens of hundreds of people.
* Mansara Apartment in Vasundhara Enclave, Mayur Vihar-1’s Vardhman and Mayurdhwaj Apartments in Patparganj were sealed. So were 39 houses in Kalyanpuri, Gali No. 9 of Pandav Nagar, two areas in Krishan Kunj and one in Khichripur.
Hotels to become hospitals if cases hit 30,000
* Chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday unveiled a five-point programme to fight the novel coronavirus as the battle against the pandemic enters a critical phase. Some hotels and banquet halls will be converted into temporary hospitals to accommodate Covid-19 patients if the number of cases crosses the 30,000 mark. Currently, there are just over 500 cases in the capital though thousands have been placed under self-quarantine.
* The CM expressed the objectives of the new programme in terms of five Ts: testing, tracing, treatment, team work and tracking and monitoring. Extensive random rapid tests will be carried out, for which the Delhi government has ordered one lakh testing kits. At a press meet on Tuesday, Kejriwal said lessons from other countries showed the administration must be three steps ahead of virus to be able to contain it.
NCR gets first ‘phone booth’ test
* A Covid-19 testing booth that allows contactless collection of samples from within a box made of glass and aluminium was opened on the premises of a government hospital in Ghaziabad on Tuesday. The facility is UP’s first and the only one of its kind in Delhi-NCR.
* All a person being tested needs to do is walk up to the kiosk and stand in front of its glass facade. The process is completed in five minutes.
* Modelled on South Korea’s ‘telephone booth’ testing centres — the Indian version has closer resemblance to a traffic police booth — it shows more urgency on ramping up testing apparatus for the novel coronavirus infection with India in the final third week of the 21-day lockdown. Just 24 hours before this, Delhi saw another idea tried abroad — the drivethrough Covid-19 test — adopted by Dr Dangs Lab.
