The Irish Prime Minister Varadkar recently announced that he would work one day a week as a doctor. Many luminaries around the world are resurrecting their medical careers. French filmmaker Thomas Lilti, who quit the medical profession in 2014, did the same. Several such personalities across the world are doing so in a bid to battle the coronavirus pandemic.

Latest to the join the bandwagon is a beauty queen. Bhasha Mukherjee, who was crowned Miss England 2019, has returned to the United Kingdom as a National Health Service (NHS) doctor to help the nation fight the pandemic that has killed over 6,000 people in the UK and over 82,000 globally.

The UK has been among the worst hit with over 50,000 positive cases, which includes Britain's Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. Johnson was tested positive last month and was moved to the ICU after his conditions worsened.

Bhasha was a junior doctor specialising in respiratory medicine but took a break from her career to contest the Miss World pageant in December last year, representing England.

She paused her ongoing charity work and returned to England to serve as a doctor during the coronavirus crisis.

The decision came after the situation in her country started deteriorating, and her colleagues at the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston explained her about the grave situation. She in no time contacted the management team of the hospital to let them know that she wanted to return to the job.

"I was invited to Africa, to Turkey, then to India, Pakistan and several other Asian countries to be an ambassador for various charity work. When you are doing all this humanitarian work abroad, you're still expected to put the crown on, get ready... look pretty.

"I wanted to come back home. I wanted to come and go straight to work. It was incredible the way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help. There's no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need," the 24-year-old told CNN.

Now back in the UK, Bhasha will be returning to work after she self-isolates as per the norm.

Like Varadkar, Bhasha also is of Indian origin. Belonging to a Bengali family, she moved to the UK from Kolkata at the age of nine.

Across the world, several retired healthcare professionals have volunteered to serve their respective nations in a bid to battle the crisis. A microscopic organism has united the otherwise conflicting and warring world like never before.
