Liz Biro, who has covered the restaurant and food beat for The Indianapolis Star since 2014, has left the newspaper, she said in a column published Tuesday.
Biro said her final day at the Star was Friday, and she left her job so she could move “back closer” to “her East Coast family.”
The food and dining content creator spent most of her life in North Carolina before moving to Indianapolis. She did not say whether she was taking a new job.
“What will I do next?” Biro wrote. “Something delicious, I’m sure. Stay tuned. … And if you’re on the N.C. shore, look me up.”
Unlike traditional newspaper food critics, Biro didn’t produce typical restaurant reviews. Her stories for the Star were usually accompanied with videos and concentrated on the positives at local dining operations.
She was active in using social media across all platforms in her coverage, and her LinkedIn profile acknowledges that she worked “closely with marketing” in her job. She also appeared frequently on restaurant segments on newscasts on WXIN-TV Channel 59, the local Fox affiliate.
Her LinkedIn profile says she was “a top-20 subscription driver among 400-plus content creators across Gannett,” the parent company of the Star.
In a 2014 Star story, Biro said she spent several years as an “old-school” restaurant critic in North Carolina and wasn’t fond of the experience. She said she preferred treating “food like a news beat.”
Biro received journalism and political science degrees from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, and also attended culinary schools in North Carolina and New York.
She operated her own catering company in North Carolina for seven years before getting into food journalism in 2005. She also ran a food tourism company in North Carolina from 2010 to 2014.
