THANE: From Tuesday, Kalwa will be sealed off, announced the Thane Municipal Corporation. Of the 22 Covid-19 cases reported from Thane city, 12 are from Kalwa, said civic officials, adding that it has been found that many residents were flouting the lockdown order.
All shops, including those selling essential items like milk and foodgrains, will remain shut till further notice. Only medical stores have been exempted. In neighbouring Mumbra, chemists, vegetable vendors and shops selling essential items will be allowed to operate till further notice.
The district administration has already enforced restriction on movement of all private vehicles in Kalwa and Mumbra since Sunday evening, after it was noted that residents were flouting the prohibitory norms.
"It has been noticed that residents aren't following the lockdown order," said Thane deputy municipal commissioner Sandeep Malvi. "Now, Kalwa residents can buy essential items online, while the elderly and the disabled can call on the corporation's helpline and the items will be delivered to them."
Local netas backed the order. "We have been requesting residents to not venture out of their homes, but to no effect. We will not allow any shops to operate in Kalwa and if residents have any problems, they can always coordinate with us or the corporation," said local corporator Milind Patil from the NCP.
