Rohan explains why father Sunil Gavaskar donated Rs 59 lakh for Covid-19 fight

Former India captain and World Cup winner Sunil Gavaskar donated Rs 59 lakh towards Covid-19 relief funds. His son Rohan explained the numbers behind Gavaskar's donation.

Legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar, it emerged on Tuesday, donated Rs 59 lakh towards Covid-19 relief fund as he joined an array of sportspersons who have contributed to the fight against the novel coronavirus outbreak.

While Sunil Gavaskar did not reveal the contribution himself, former Mumbai batsman Amol Majumdar took to social media to confirm the donation.

Sunil Gavaskar donated Rs 35 lakh to PM-CARES fund and Rs 24 lakh to the Maharashtra state government's Covid-19 relief fund, Majumdar said.

Confirming the news, former India cricketer and Gavaskar's son, Rohan said the donation was made last week. Rohan also shed light on the numbers behind Gavaskar's donation for the Covid-19 relief.

"This was done last week. 35 because he scored 35 hundreds for India and 24 because he scored 24 for Mumbai. Prayers for everyone's good health and that we are all safe and sound," Rohan Gavaskar wrote on Twitter.

Sunil Gavaskar is considered one of the greatest batsmen of all-time to have played the sport.

The 1983 World Cup winner played 125 Tests and collected 10122 runs, including 34 hundreds. In 108 ODIs, Gavaskar amassed 3092 runs, including a hundred. Gavaskar played 348 first-class matches across the globe, scoring 25,834 runs and 81 hundreds.

Earlier in the day, Cheteshwar Pujara also made his contribution to the Covid-19 relief funds.

"My family & I have contributed our bit to the-CARES Fund and the Gujarat CM Relief Fund, and hope that you will too. Every single contribution counts, so let us all do our bit and together we will certainly overcome," Pujara stated.

"We would like to convey our deepest gratitude to all the front line warriors - medical professionals, policemen/women, grocery staff, and so many others - for their dedication, courage, and sacrifices in serving our nation and humanity."
