PUNE: With printing and distribution of magazines stunted due to the coronavirus lockdown, several Marathi magazines are expecting huge losses over the next months.

The All India Marathi Editors’ Association has stated that the situation was such that the magazines would not even have enough finances to print the next month’s issue. Around 200 Marathi magazines are part of the association.

“Due to the lockdown, even post offices are not functioning at full capacity, due to which our published magazines are not getting delivered. We are currently in talks with the authorities to find a solution to this issue,” said Bhalchandra Kulkarni, All India Marathi Editor’s Association President.

He further added, “We cannot change the date of publication and delivery. We get concessions from the post office only if we post the magazines on the given date. Otherwise, the cost can increase up to Rs 4 per magazine from the present 25 paise.”

Kulkarni added that published magazines are lying around, as they cannot be posted and new editions cannot be published.

“Private presses have been shut by the government. Hence, we have many challenges to face,” he added.

Maharashtra has been the worst affected state due to the coronavirus pandemic. The major cities of Pune and Mumbai are witnessing a steady rise in the positive cases (now reaching 800) as well as the death toll.
