BENGALURU: Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths arrested a 53-year-old man for allegedly storing and selling explosive petroleum chemicals to manufacturers of substandard sanitisers.
Renuka Prasad, a resident of BTM Layout who runs a chemical shop in Sudhamanagar, near Wilson Garden, was arrested on Saturday after a CCB police team raided his establishment and seized over 1,300 litres of petroleum chemicals.
Police said Prasad confessed to the crime, saying he had stored the highly flammable chemicals without taking permission and sold them to persons who were illegally manufacturing substandard sanitisers to make quick money during the Covid-19 lockdown.
Investigation is under way to identify Prasad's keycustomers. Wilson Garden police have filed a case under various sections of Petroleum Act, 1934 against him. "Prasad had stored the highly flammable chemicals in his shop which could have been hazardous in case of an accidental fire," Sandeep Patil, joint commissioner of police (crime) said.
Cops found 400 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 210 litres of tolin, 100 litres of turpentine, 600 litres of acetone and 50 litres of benzyl alcohol, along with some quantity of nitro benzene, silicon oil, liquid paraffin, glycerine and other chemicals from his shop.
