FALL RIVER — Police allege a 55-year-old man found early Tuesday morning near Saint Anne’s Hospital broke into a South Main Street auto shop, injuring himself on the way out.

A business alarm alerted police to the break-in at JZ Express, said police spokesman Detective John Robinson.

Fall River police officer Zachery Vorce discovered a shattered glass front door to the auto repair shop and gas station, and drops of blood on the glass and floor, Robinson said in a statement.

Officers searched the area and located a man police identified as Keith A. Cummings, 55, with a last known address of 1812 Stafford Road Apt. 2, about a block away near the hospital. Cummings appeared to be intoxicated and was bleeding from one of his hands, Robinson said.

Vorce reviewed the businesses’ surveillance footage, which allegedly showed Cummings smash the door, then rifle through cabinets inside the business before leaving without taking a thing, according to police.

Police said Cummings cut his hand on broken glass on his way out. Cummings was treated at Saint Anne’s, then booked on a charge of felony nighttime breaking and entering.

Officers Zachary Dupere, Christopher Teves and Aaron Souza assisted.
