How Gurugram stopped migration of labourers during lockdown

Govt agencies provide food, shelter and medicines to the workers in Haryana
GURUGRAM: While the entire country was grappling with reverse migration of workers amid the lockdown, the state managed to stabilise the movement and assuage their concerns, thanks to the efforts of government agencies.
After the nation-wide lockdown was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, scores of migrants workers started returning to their native states. There were apprehensions of uncertainty among labourers and worker class, due to which trends of reverse migration” started in some places of the state, including Gurugram.

However, the situation was checked through persuasive efforts by various government agencies after various teams were formed to work on the following objectives:
• Immediate relief through establishment of relief camps – food & shelter
• Medical assistance
• Transportation assistance back to place of origin
• Prevention of any crime/intimidation
• Counselling to allay concerns over livelihood

Key government agencies involved in the efforts:
• Police
• Revenue officers
• Municipal corporation
• Panchayat officers & sarpanchs
• GMCBL (Gurugaman)
• Red Cross
• Civil defence

As per the comprehensive action plan for effective implementation of lockdown and for provision food and shelter for such migrant labourers/worker as near as possible to their location where they had arrived barefoot from neighboring district/state, following, shelter home were established in urban area as well as rural area:

Civil society organisations, corporates were roped in this situation of crisis and in collaboration with them, district administration has been able to cater to their demands effectively. The shelter homes are equipped with basic amenities and facilities like medical check-up, freshly cooked food, sanitation, drinking water, dignity kits are being distributed to women residing in shelter homes. The shelter homes regularly and frequently decontaminated and sanitized.

Concerted efforts led to stabilization of the movement and assuaging concerns of the migrating persons, thereafter bulk of them sought to return to their place of origin that was facilitated through available transport medium while keeping in mind social distancing norms.
Apart from these shelter homes, food is also provided in various food camps established to cater to the needy people during the lockdown which includes migrating labors, unskilled/skilled labourers who worked in private sector in various industrial/commercial units in Gurugram district. Dry ration was also distributed with the NGOs/Civil defense in the MCG area as per need.
With all these timely and concerted efforts by the district administration, the migrated labourers are now keen and awaiting lockdown curtailment in order to restart their normal lives. It is being illustrated in form of video which is being sent along with this report.
