After theatres across India close down due to coronavirus, Angrezi Medium releases online

Officially released on March 13, 2020, the dramatic comedy was pulled out of theatres due to COVID-19, but is now available to stream on Disney Plus on Hotstar

Starring Irrfan Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Radhika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal and Vogue India's April 2020 cover star Kareena Kapoor Khan,  Angrezi Medium has now made its premiere in the digital streaming world, and is available to watch on Disney Plus on Hotstar VIP. Director Homi Adajania expressed his excitement at the launch of his movie on the platform as it has an enormous viewer base.

The movie hit theatres on March 13, 2020 and opened to Rs 4.03 crore, and hit Rs 9.50 over its opening weekend before cinemas across India were forced to shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak. Producer Dinesh Vijayan explained the timing of the release saying, “We had no option as the film had already opened in the UAE-GCC market on Thursday, when the chief minister of Delhi announced shutdown of theatres later in the day. Had we known three-four days ago that this would happen, we might have had time to rethink the release, but on Thursday, it was too late to pull back.”

The dramedy, in case you missed it, tells the story of a small-town businessman (Irrfan Khan) and his journey to overcome the many obstacles that face him in fulfilling his daughter (played by Radhika Madan)’s dream of graduating from a university in London. “It’s a film to watch with your heart and you’ll have a blast. It puts a smile on your face and makes you feel good,” Adajania tells Vogue India.

Irrfan Khan, who was unable to attend the promotions of the film due to his ongoing medical treatment, was among the first to tweet about the launch of the movie on a digital platform. “Hop on to the dreamy roller-coaster ride with this father-daughter duo as we bring to you the World Digital Premiere of #AngreziMedium only on @DisneyplusHSVIP!” the star announced earlier today. In an emotional video message to his audience, Khan had also previously shared his disappointment at not being able to promote the film, and also spoken to his well-wishers about all the efforts that went into creating the movie.

During the days leading up to Angrezi Medium's release, stars including Anushka Sharma, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Panday, Kriti Sanon and Kiara Advani also showed support for the film's team by sharing fun clips of themselves dancing to one of the film's tracks, ‘Kudi Nu Nachne De’ from their own homes.
