BOSTON -- The average gas price in Massachusetts tumbled below $2 per gallon for the first time in four years.

AAA Northeast on Monday reported prices fell six cents a gallon over the past week.

While many people are driving less and staying home, the prices offer relief to essential workers commuting to and from jobs as well as people who have had their hours reduced or lost jobs.

The $1.99 per gallon average compares with a national gas price average off $1.92. A year ago at this time, the average price in Massachusetts was $2.55.

"This week, market analysts are watching crude oil prices, which started to increase at the end of last week. However, given the low demand, increases in crude aren't likely to have an impact on gas prices in the near-term," said Mary Maguire of AAA Northeast.

AAA found regular unleaded for as low as $1.09.
