CHANDIGARH: The UT administration has issued 100 passes to city-based wholesale traders to bring essential
commodities from five states,
Punjab, Haryana,
Rajasthan, Delhi and
Uttar Pradesh.
Since the city doesn't have its own production and largely depends on other states, officials of the administration are in touch with the central government and other state governments too.
Currently, the supply of essential items in the city is smooth and all essential items are easily available. However, shortage of labourers and other related staff at shops and non-availability of passes could cause problems.
"As Chandigarh does not have its own production and the other states are not in a position to provide vehicles, we have issued 100 passes to wholesale suppliers to bring essential commodities like rice, pulses, sugar, flour and other related essential items from these states uninterruptedly," said official sources.
UT adviser Manoj Parida said, "Currently, the supply chain of essential commodities and other items is smooth and the flow is regular. No vehicles are involved in bringing the essential commodities are being stopped. But, since situation is fluid and changing daily, we are being careful. But I think that being a small city, our requirement is less as compared to other states and Chandigarh will not face any problem. We have already tied-up in this regard with the central government."
Deputy commissioner Mandip Singh Brar said, "We are ensuring essential commodities in the city. Officers of the excise and taxation department have already been deployed to monitor that everything goes on smoothly. We are also in constant touch with the officers and departments of other states." Ram Karan Gupta, president, Sector 26-based grain market association, said, "There is proper supply of essential commodities. But we don't know what will happen in the future as we are dependent on other states for smooth supply."
