PRAYAGRAJ: Following the directives of the Railway Board the authorities of North Central Railway (NCR) have begun their work for converting sleeper class and general class coaches into isolation wards.
TOI visited the coach maintenance workshop at Prayagraj, which has been given the task of making such wards, along with Jhansi, Agra, Kanpur and Gwalior, and had the glimpse of how these vital coaches would look after they finely take shape.
“We have been asked to convert those sleeper and general coaches into isolation wards with more than 15 years life would be taken up for conversion and NCR would be making a total of 130 such coaches, 70 of which are already ready and the rest would be complete by April 10”, said general manager NCR, Rajiv Chaudhry.
Detailing about the highlights and facilities of these isolation wards, the chief public relation officer (CPRO) of NCR, Ajeet Kumar Singh said, “Of the two toilets, that are there at the end of each coach, one has been converted into a bathing room while the other would be used for defecation. Wooden batten structure or chequered sheet have been placed on the entire lavatory floor so that there is no level difference on the floor”. It is to be equipped with bucket, mug and soap dispenser, he added.
He further said that the taps in the toilets and washbasins would be the one with lift type handle.
Once we enter the coach, the first cabin near the bathing room shall be provided with two plastic curtains transversely in the aisle so that the entry and exit to the entire cabin can be screened off. This cabin will be used as store or as paramedics area.
“We have removed the middle birth in all the cabins and hence each cabin can be used by four patients”, said CPRO.
Likewise, two Oxygen cylinders will also be provided by the medical department for which suitable clamping arrangement on the side berth, located at the side of this cabin. Extra bottle holders shall be provided in each cabin for holding medical equipment, two for each berth and pair of Three peg coat hooks would be provided in each cabin.
“All the windows of these coaches have been provided with mosquito nets to avoid mosquitoes' entry inside and have proper ventilation too”, said Singh.
Besides, each cabin has been provided with three dustbins with foot operated lids of Red, Blue and Yellow colour, suitably lined with garbage bags.
All charging points for laptop and mobile within each cabin would be made functional.
No insulation of bamboo, chic or khus, etc would be provided in these isolation coaches and each coach shall be intensively cleaned before being offered for occupation.
After the conversion work is over, these coaches would be put for inspection to get the utilisation certificates by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Finance, said the CPRO.
