India's service sector activity goes into contraction mode

India's services sector activity contracted during March as the COVID-19 pandemic dented demand, particularly in overseas markets, while public health measures aimed at stemming the outbreak curtailed discretionary spending, a monthly survey said.

The IHS Markit India Services Business Activity Index was at 49.3 in March, down from February's 85-month high of 57.5, as the new coronavirus pandemic pulled the service sector into contraction.

The headline figure fell by over 8 points, undoing the strong gains in growth momentum seen throughout 2019, the survey said.

The week that could decide it all

The coming week holds the key to whether India will stay on course to enter the ‘steady phase’ by April 16. According to data, India is currently in the ‘acceleration phase’ that has worsened on account of the spread traceable to the Delhi gathering of the Tablighi Jamaat.

Estimates forecast that at the current rate, the ‘ending phase’ of the spread in India should start from May 9.

However, the predictions — drawn up using Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) modelling — have not fully taken into account the Tablighi Jamaat episode, where contacts and the extent of spread of the infection are still being traced.

Japan to declare state of emergency as COVID-19 cases surge

Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is planning to declare a state of emergency in view of the surging cases of coronavirus in the country, especially in Tokyo and other large cities, government sources said on Monday.

South Korea reported fewer than 50 new coronavirus cases on Monday for the first time since its Feb. 29 peak as daily infections in Asia's largest outbreak outside China continued to trend downward.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 47 new infections, compared with 81 recorded a day earlier, taking the national cumulative tally to 10,284.

Iran to gradually ease anti-coronavirus restrictions

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the existing restrictions imposed to curb the COVID-19 spread in the country would be eased gradually in the following weeks, official IRNA news agency reported.

The authorities have decided to ease some restrictions implemented in the country over the past days, Rouhani said in a meeting of the National Headquarters for Managing and Fighting the Coronavirus on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

Telangana Chief Minister takes protective measure for medical staff treating COVID-19 patients

The chief minister held a high-level review meeting on Sunday at Pragathi Bhavan on measures being taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the state.

"Medical and health staff are rendering great services to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Special measures are taken for the protection of their health," a release quoted Rao as saying.

According to an official statement, the Chief Minister wanted funds donated for the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) to be utilised to procure PPEs, masks and medicines for the staff.

The Chief Minister said, for those coming to offer medical help, test kits, PPEs, masks and other medicines are available in adequate numbers. Even if there was an increase in patients in the future, PPEs and masks will be procured as per the demand.
