CHENNAI: Two patients died and 74 others tested positive for Covid-19 in
Tamil Nadu on Saturday, taking the total
death toll to three and number of cases to 485 in the state.
At a press meeting here on Saturday evening, health secretary Beela Rajesh said 422 of those who tested positive belong to a group of people who had travelled to Delhi to attend a three-day Tablighi Jamaat conference and their close contacts. One among the people who tested positive on Saturday was a relative of a patient from Chennai, who had a history of travel, she said.
On Saturday afternoon, a 53-year-old woman, whose husband also tested positive for the viral infection, died in Theni Medical College Hospital. Her husband, who had participated in the religious conference, was admitted to hospital on March 31. The next day, she was admitted to the hospital as she suffered breathlessness.
“She was responding to treatment and was stable. On Friday, tests showed that she had the viral infection. Doctors were giving her oxygen to keep her comfortable. She was stable till this morning but her condition deteriorated in the afternooon,” said health minster C Vijaya Baskar.
Earlier, a 52-year-old man from Villupuram, also a part of the TJ group, died. He had been undergoing treatment in
Villupuram Medical College Hospital since April 1, officials said.
Last week, a 54-year-old man, who tested positive for the infection, died in Madurai.
