LUCKNOW: When UP chief minister
Yogi Adityanath completes three years of being in office on March 19, he will set a record of being the first
BJP leader to do so. After visiting Noida as the CM, this is another jinx that he would break. He is the fourth CM from the saffron party to head politically most crucial states in the country.
Before Yogi, Kalyan Singh,
Ram Prakash Gupta and Rajnath Singh of the BJP had served as UP chief ministers but none could complete three years. Before him, Kalyan Singh, in his second stint, had the longest tenure of a little over two years between 1997 and 1999.
Kalyan Singh had held the high office twice. He became the CM for the first time on June 24, 1991 and held the post till December 6, 1992 when Babri Masjid was brought down. His second stint was from September 21, 1997, to November 12, 1999. He was succeeded by Ram Prakash Gupta, who was held thfrom November 12, 1999, to October 28, 2000. Rajnath Singh occupied the office from October 28, 2000, to March 8, 2002.
Yogi’s completion of three years is seen by BJP leaders as a big accomplishment. "Yogi Adityanath is one such leaders who broke many jinx, including the one going to Noida. He is also one of the few CMs who toured almost all the states and took various public centric steps,” said UP BJP spokesperson, Rakesh Tripathi.
BJP leaders said that Yogi has been carrying the image of a clean administrator whose tenure remain unblemished off corruption. “His government has worked for all section of society including farmers, youth and underprivileged,” said a senior BJP leader. The BJP leader said that the Yogi’s popularity was not only restricted to UP but also in other states where he was roped in as star campaigner during assembly elections.
The opposition, however, rubbished BJP’s claim about Yogi’s achievement as CM. “The three year rule has been full of law and order crisis. Innocent were shot down at a drop of hat. Farmers are not getting their due and youth are jobless,” said SP legislator Udaibir Singh, who is considered close to SP chief
Akhilesh Yadav.
The Mayawati-led BSP also called Yogi’s tenure a failure. “The state government is only limited to set targets but not achieving them,” said a senior BSP leader.
UP Congress committee chief Ajay Kumar Lallu said that the party would release a booklet detailing about failure of the ruling BJP government on March 19.
