HYDERABAD: Telangana State Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and also the National Population Register (NPR) in its present format.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao moved the resolution in the Assembly on Monday. "In view of the apprehensions among a large section of people of India, the Legislative Assembly of Telangana urge the government of India to amend the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 in order to remove all references to any religion or to any foreign country," the resolution said.
Telangana Assembly is the seventh one in the series to oppose the CAA and NPR. Assemblies of Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Delhi and Bihar had earlier adopted similar resolutions.
"This House urges the government of Telangana to take all necessary steps to safeguard the people of Telangana from exercises such as NPR and NRC," the resolution stated.

While moving the resolution, CM Chandrasekhar Rao questioned the need of such divisive and narrow-minded politics for the country. Though citizenship is needed, the present procedure for granting it is not correct, he felt.
Recalling US President Donald Trump's election statement that they would build a wall to stop the illegal immigrants to US from Mexico, Chandrasekhar Rao said that if the Central government wanted to construct a wall all along the border of Myanmar, the Telangana government too was ready to support such an initiative. Rao recalled that the TRS supported the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution. But, the CAA and NRC were against the preamble of the Constitution.
While the MIM and the Congress supported the resolution, the lone member of the BJP in the Assembly T Raja Singh tore a copy of the resolution, rushed to the Speaker's podium and raised slogans against the TRS government for telling the "lies" to the Telangana people on CAA, NPR and NRC.
