Coimbatore: A 41-year-old man was arrested on Saturday night for assaulting a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary at Sundarapuram on March 11.
Police identified the accused as A Mohammed Hanifa, of GM Nagar at Ukkadam. A member of Muslim outfit, Hanifa is said to have hatched the conspiracy to attack RSS functionary Suryaprakash, 26, of Sundarapuram, with several others.
According to an investigation officer, Suryaprakash was assaulted by a bike-borne duo at his edible oil shop at Marakkadai around 6.40pm on March 11. “He was severely injured in the attack and suffered a fracture to his left hand. After the attack, the duo sped away on the bike.”
Suryaprakash, who was admitted to a private hospital, lodged a complaint with the Podanur police, who registered a case against unidentified people for attempt to murder. As tension gripped the city post the attack, three special teams were formed to nab the accused.
The special teams verified CCTV footage, tower dumps and arrested Hanifa on Saturday night and seized a motorcycle from him.
“During the interrogation, he said many others were involved in the attack. So, more arrests are expected in the case. On Sunday, he was produced before a local court, which remanded him in judicial custody. Further investigation is on,” the officer said.
