NEW DELHI: Two women thieves from Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh have been arrested for stealing Rs 5 lakh from a woman after engaging her in a conversation at a stationery shop. The incident took place in West Delhi’s
Tagore Garden area.
The victim was preparing for her entrance exam, and had withdrawn the money to pay her coaching fees and for some other expenses.
The accused have been identified as Nargis (35) and Anjali (23). Both of them are married and hail from Kadiya village in Rajgarh.
On March 7, Garima approached police informing them about the theft. She told the cops that she was preparing for GMAT exam. She had gone to a bank at Tagore Garden shopping complex and withdrawn Rs 5lakh. Two women later followed her till the stationery shop where Garima went to get some photocopies done.
“While one of the accused engaged her in a discussion, another one managed to open the zip of her bag and steal Rs 5lakh from it,” said Deepak Purohit, deputy commissioner of police, West Delhi.
The accused then left the shop immediately. When Garima checked her bag to pay for the photocopies, she realised her money was missing.
“We identified and tracked the women and the auto driver with the help of the CCTV footage. The accused duo would usually live on the city outskirts and travel by autorickshaw. They have ten cases registered against them in Rajgarh and three in Delhi,” said a police officer.
The arrested auto driver was later identified as Pramod Podar. He told the cops that he charged Rs 2,000 to ferry the women to various malls and shopping areas. The gang members would later meet in Gurgaon.
They had handed over the stolen money to Geeta Bai, Anjali’s mother, who left for Rajgarh a day after the incident.
“The gang members from Madhya Pradesh have committed similar crimes in other states as well. They dress up well and enter wedding venues, banks and shopping complexes to look for possible targets,” the officer added.
