The sanctuary is known for its blackbucks
TRICHY: A wildlife census was conducted in Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu on Saturday and Sunday.
The forest department conducted the two-day census with the help of volunteers from the Biodiversity Conservation Foundation (BCF), Trichy.
This sanctuary, spread across 21.47 square km area, is a unique blend of terrestrial, mangrove and seashore ecosystem.
The sanctuary is known for its blackbucks. While the census was mainly meant for enumerating the blackbuck population, it also counted the population wildlife species like mongoose, pangolin, spotted deer and Jackal in the sanctuary.
Large numbers of deaths were reported in the sanctuary in November 2018 during the onslaught of cyclone Gaja. Seawater got stagnated in the sanctuary after the cyclone. The census would throw light on changes witnessed by the forest eco-system, said a senior forest official.
